Live Biotherapeutics Drug Discovery Service for Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)

Overview

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is an acute gastrointestinal infectious disease caused by enterovirus, which mainly occurs in children under 10 years old. The main clinical signs of HFMD are blisters or rashes on the hands, feet, buttocks, and mouth. The pathogens of HFMD are mainly enterovirus 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16), which target the gastrointestinal epithelium and use intestinal bacteria to proliferate, cause disease, and spread, thus leading to the occurrence and development of the disease. Probiotics and prebiotics have been demonstrated to be beneficial for intestinal diseases by several studies and are widely used as supplements to nutritional strategies aimed at enhancing intestinal immunity. Currently, researchers are considering the use of probiotics and prebiotics to prevent HFMD.

Probiotics for HFMD Therapy

The results of the study showed that oral administration of Golden Bifid reduced the symptoms of severe HFMD. Golden Bifid, also known as Lactobacillus bifidobacterium triple viable tablets, is mainly composed of Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium longum, Streptococcus thermophilus, and probiotic factors that promote the growth and reproduction of human intestinal tract to supplement intestinal probiotics. Studies have shown that they inhibit the activation of four serum proinflammatory factors by effectively reducing the expression levels of IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, and IFN-γ in serum, thereby alleviating inflammation. Golden Bifid can effectively alleviate the clinical symptoms of severe HFMD, maintain intestinal immunity and anti-inflammatory response, and improve intestinal barrier function, indicating that intestinal probiotics are safe and effective in the treatment of severe HFFMD. The HFMD virus is vulnerable to attack under acidic conditions, and researchers found that kombucha has effective HFMD antiviral activity due to its symbiotic probiotic components, namely yeast, and xylobacter, which have very high acidic activity. The reduced abundance of Prevotella and Clostridium_XIVa, which can produce SCFAs, may be an important part of future research on the microecological mechanisms and treatment of HFMD infants.
