Sterilization is a physical or chemical act or process that destroys or eliminates all forms of life, especially microorganisms. Assurance of a low probability of any living micro-organisms remaining is used as a measure of sterility. Sterilization monitoring improves the assurance that medical devices have been adequately sterilized. Biological monitoring is accepted as the most effective method. The role of biological indicators is to introduce highly resistant bacterial spores during the sterilization cycle. If these spores are destroyed, it can be assumed that any contaminating organisms in the load have also been killed, since these organisms are less resistant than the spores and are present in smaller numbers.
