Akkermansia muciniphila is a Gram-negative bacterium that grows under strict anaerobic conditions. It is an oval bacterium without motility and spore production. It generally grows singly or in pairs, and can also grow in clumps in the medium containing mucin. Extensive research is being undertaken to understand its association with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and inflammation.
