Overview of Obesity

Obesity or overweight is medically considered as a kind of chronic metabolic disease in which abnormal or excessive fat accumulates causing multiple adverse effects on human health. Over the past few decades, the prevalence of obesity worldwide has more than tripled since 1975, leading to current approximately one-third of the population now living with obesity. As a major public health problem, obesity is known to cause a series of human diseases and pathologies, among which cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, fatty liver, cancers are the most common types.

Role of Gut Microbiota in Obesity

There are many factors causing obesity, mainly including excessive intake of energy, lifestyle, genetics, other diseases, lack of sleep, and so forth. Among these causes, the gut microbiota is a recently identified factor of obesity and obesity-related metabolic disorders. Microbiota colonized in the human intestinal tract is implanted to the pathogenesis of obesity through multiple proposed mechanisms (see Fig.2):

  • Protect and increase the permeability of gastrointestinal mucosa;
  • Increased lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in the gastrointestinal tract results in enhanced circulating LPS levels, inducing low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance;
  • Gut microbiota, such as Bacteroides spp., ferment dietary polysaccharides and fiber to yield short-chain fatty acid (SCFA), offering the host with an additional source of energy;
  • Involve in the control of energy intake and modulation of the nervous system.

Probiotics: a New Path for Obesity Treatment

It has been validated that gut microbiota and gut microbiota composition not only play considerable actions in the pathogenesis of obesity but also plays a key role in obesity modulation. Gut microbiota has emerged as a potential target that plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of obesity. Numbers of studies have been conducted to explore and develop obesity treatment by a diversity of probiotics, such as Lactobacillus spp., Bifidobacterium spp., Akkermansia muciniphila, etc.
