Autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) is a prevalent autoimmune disorder. The human microbiome has emerged as a crucial regulator of health and disease, with implications for human well-being. It appears that the microbiota can influence the uptake of I- and the enterohepatic system circulation of thyroid hormones. Microbiome metabolites significantly affect thyroid function. Ongoing research primarily focuses on short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which possess the ability to enhance intestinal epithelial cell integrity, prevent pathological microbial invasion, regulate immune responses, and inhibit inflammatory processes. Furthermore, SCFAs play a pivotal role in regulating the balance between Th17 cells and Treg cells and are closely associated with the onset and progression of autoimmune diseases.

Culturing the fecal microbial communities of healthy donors under strict anaerobic conditions captures a significant proportion of the gut microbiome and preserves the uniqueness of each donor microbiome.
Although all in vitro models have their limitations, the use of in vitro models can yield insights into Graves' disease (GD) and a better understanding of the disease.
GD is an autoimmune disease that often causes symptoms such as hyperthyroidism. The study demonstrated the mechanism by which Bifidobacterium longum probiotics regulate the intestinal flora of GD patients and reduce the recurrence rate and developed a potentially useful treatment for GD based on the regulation of intestinal flora.
