Though primarily a pathogen, Cryptococcus neoformans is studied as a chassis to understand fungal-host interactions and for specific vaccine development. Engineering this yeast involves neutralizing its virulence factors to create safe "vectors" for delivering antigens. Its application prospects are currently more focused on fundamental immunology and fungal vaccine platforms than general probiotics.
