Acinetobacter baumannii

Often viewed as a multi-drug resistant threat, engineered "safe" versions of Acinetobacter are being developed as chassis for skin-dwelling probiotics. These strains can be programmed to produce antimicrobial peptides to kill pathogenic S. aureus or to secrete skin-repairing factors. Their potential lies in specialized topical treatments for chronic wounds or hospital-acquired infections.
