Prevotella copri

Prevotella copri is a gram-negative rods bacteria, belonging to the phylum Bacteroidetes They are anaerobic and nonspore-forming. Prevotella copri is an intestinal bacteria, and its anaerobic qualities allows it to grow successfully in the human gut and intestines. Colonies on EG agar plates after 48 h incubation at 37°C under 100% CO2 are white, circular and convex. Optimum temperature for growth is 37°C. Growth is inhibited on Bacteroides bile aesculin agar. Indole negative and aesculin is hydrolysed. No activity is detected for urease and gelatin is not hydrolysed. As a potential next generation probiotic, Prevotella copri was found to improve aberrant glucose tolerance syndromes and enhance hepatic glycogen storage in animals via the production of succinate, a tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediate fermented from uptake of dietary fibers, that is responsible for glucose homeostasis through modulating intestinal gluconeogenesis. Recent studies have shown a correlation between Prevotella copri and the development of rheumatoid arthritis.
