Introduction to Parabacteroides goldsteinii

Parabacteroides goldsteinii (P. goldsteinii), also known as P. goldsteinii (Song et al. 2006) Sakamoto and Benno 2006, is a Gram-negative bacterium belonging to the genus of Parabacteroides and the family of Porphyromonadaceae. It was formerly named as Bacteroides goldsteinii, a human pathogen isolated from clinical intestinal specimens by Song et al. in 2005, and latterly reclassified as P. goldsteinii comb. nov. by Sakamoto et al. in 2006.

P. goldsteinii is a non-spore-forming and non-motile bacterium with rod-shaped and about 0.9-1.5 μm×1.2-10 μm in size. Colonies on the Brucella blood agar presents opaque gray round, slightly convex and smooth, with a diameter of 1~2 mm. P. goldsteinii is an obligately anaerobic species novel species principally distributing in human intestinal and feces.

Probiotic Potential of P. goldsteinii for Anti-Obesity

Although P. goldsteinii was identified as a pathogen from individuals with clinical infections, its probiotic potential against obesity has been demonstrated in high-fat diet-induced obesity mice. During the study of anti-obesogenic effects of Hirsutella sinensis (H. sinensis), gut microbiota analysis found that the level of P. goldsteinii is significantly reduced in obesity mice, while is much higher in H. sinensis treated mice. Besides, further investigations indicated that:

  • Firstly, oral administration of live P. goldsteinii significantly reduced the weight gain and visceral fat, maintained intestinal integrity, and increased adipose tissue thermogenesis, exhibiting therapeutic effects on obesity and metabolic disorders in obesity mice model;
  • Secondly, the live P. goldsteini treatment reduced endotoxemia and inflammation through inhibiting the mRNA expression of IL-1β and cell monolayer disruption, meanwhile, increasing the expression of IL-10 and ZO-1 in the colon;
  • Thirdly, efficient transfer of P. goldsteinii by horizontal fecal microbiota transplantation also reduced insulin resistance and symptoms of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in high-fat diet mice;
  • Lastly and importantly, all these effective treatments by live P. goldsteini had no impact on liver or kidney functions.
